Top research articles published over the past five years have linked green tea to a variety of health benefits. Weight loss, protection against heart disease, cancer, allergies, depression, and eye health. But there may be more to green tea’s weight-loss properties than we think.

 

One of the most compelling studies to date examined how green tea diets impact body weight. Participants in the study consumed large quantities of green tea powder daily for three months. Participants who drank green tea did not gain weight. They maintained a steady weight and significantly reduced their body fat. The study’s authors suggested green tea’s effects could be responsible for weight loss.

This is not the first time studies have shown the potential for green tea to produce weight-loss effects. In a 2004 study published in the journal Nutrition & Cancer, researchers studied the effect of green tea supplements on liver weight, lipoprotein (a) oxidization, and overall cholesterol. Participants consumed large quantities of green tea powder each day for one month. At the conclusion of the study, participants lost about 10% of their body weight and about 5% of their body fat.

 

The health benefits of green tea are primarily tied to its natural anti-inflammatory effects. Researchers have suggested that green tea may prevent weight gain by improving insulin sensitivity and protecting against inflammation. But until now, there have been few studies linking green tea and its health benefits to skin health.

Caffeine has a substantial anti-aging effect. It may not be the main factor responsible for green tea’s skin benefits, but it may play a significant role. In a 2008 study published in the Journal of Nutrition and Cancer, researchers found that green tea may improve skin health in several ways. The most significant result was improved skin elasticity. The green tea group had significant skin elasticity improvements compared to the caffeine group.

 

Other studies have shown green tea has significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects on the skin. For example, a 2011 study published in the journal Biochemical Pharmacology showed that green tea has substantial antioxidant effects on the skin. In the study, green tea was ingested three times daily for three months. The green tea group had a significant reduction in skin fat content. Their skin had a green-to-orange hue and looked healthy and happy.

 

While some studies have shown significant skin improvement from green tea, other studies have shown little effect on skin health. One study on older adults suggested green tea increased insulin sensitivity but did not have any significant effects on healthy skin or elasticity. 2013 a study published in Nutrition & Cancer focused on different fatty acids that enhance skin health. The researchers found that a green tea diet increased a compound known as gamma-glutamylcysteine (GGC), which has a healthy skin effect.


Researchers have also found green tea may stimulate the production of more skin-friendly compounds. A 2010 study published in the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Science examined the effect of drinking green tea on the production of skin-healthy compounds. The study’s authors found green tea reduces the production of a substance called hyaluronic acid(HA). HA is a skin-friendly compound that plays an important role in the development of healthy skin. The authors suggest green tea may have a significant impact on improving skin health.

 

In a 2012 study published in the journal Food & Nutrition Nutrition, researchers analyzed the effects of green tea on skin proteins. The study showed the green tea-sipping participants had improved skin elasticity compared to a group that consumed green tea only occasionally. In a  2013 study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, researchers found green tea may improve skin elasticity, skin thickness, and the skin’s ability to absorb nutrients.

 

Studies suggest a green tea-sipping diet may improve overall health. For example, researchers have found that green tea may reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The benefits of green tea on weight loss are also well documented. A 2008 study published in the Journal of Nutrition and Cancer found that drinking green tea for just two weeks can reduce the risk of obesity and moderate the onset of type 2 diabetes.

 

Scientific evidence suggests green tea may help prevent and treat skin health conditions such as skin cancer and inflammatory skin diseases. Research is also underway to determine the impact of green tea on wrinkles and skin fat accumulation.
